Communication & Conflict
"We keep getting stuck in the same communication traps.."
"It feels like a pattern we just can't escape from.."
"We are so good in other areas but once a fight starts it's like the gloves come off and it's on.."
"I want us to be able to talk about parenting decisions without it turning into this big thing.."
If I had to name one primary reason couples come into therapy together, it would be this:
"We just need to work on our communication."
It might be that this is an area you've always struggled but maybe before kids or aging parents, you didn't have nearly so much to argue about.. it might be that as life has gone on things have changed and you don't feel as connected as you once did, so now those intense arguments or heavy conversations sting way more than they used to. There are lots of reasons that couples reach the point where eventually, something has to give, and they can no longer manage their communication on their own.
Couples therapy for communication and conflict can provide a bridge to understanding each other, to being able to have hard conversations with empathy, and to learning the skills (and the stuff getting in the way of the skills), so that you can move forward in your relationship with confidence.
Relationships are full of difficulty by their very nature - we change, our partners change, and life changes... we bring our childhood wounds, our insecurities as adults, and our daily stress. It's a lot to navigate! But you don't have to do it alone.
I will work with you to achieve the goals you want for your relationship to move forward, whatever that looks like! Using Gottman methodology, family systems interventions, and communication and emotional regulation skills coaching, we can work together to rebuild your relationship to bring you joy again.
When we are stuck in the dysfunctional 'dance' of an unhappy relationship, it can feel impossible to break the cycle. Sometimes we need a third party, a nonjudgmental and objective space, to be able to see what's really going on, and most importantly to teach you some new moves!
Reach out today and we can talk about what couples therapy might look like for you, your goals, and your hopes and we can begin planning how to get you there!
