A Different Way of Thinking About Parenting

Many parents throughout Hawaii and California come to me feeling like they need better strategies. Sometimes that’s true; but more often, what they’re really longing for is clarity, steadiness, and a deeper understanding of what’s happening underneath their child’s behavior.

Children (and especially teens) communicate through their actions long before they communicate through words.

In our parent coaching sessions, we gently explore:

  • What might my child be needing right now?

  • What patterns keep repeating in my home?

  • What happens inside me when conflict arises?

  • How can boundaries and warmth exist at the same time?

  • Why does my teenager shut down or explode?

  • How can my partner and I get on the same page?

Parent coaching is not about perfection. It’s about alignment between your values, your responses, and the relationship you want to build with your child.

When Parenting Differences Create Strain

One of the most tender and complicated dynamics I see in my work is tension between parents or co-parents.

You may both love your child deeply, yet still disagree on discipline, independence, technology, emotional expression, or expectations. Over time, those differences can create frustration, resentment, or inconsistency that leaves the entire family feeling unsettled.

In our parent coaching sessions, we create space to understand each other’s perspectives without blame. We work toward shared language and collaborative decisions.

Children feel safest when the adults around them feel aligned, so my goal is to help you move toward unity, respect, and steadiness.

Guidance In Parenting Teenagers With Intention

Adolescence is a profound transition for both teens and parents. Your once-open child may now seem distant. Conversations that used to be easy may now seem impossible.

Parenting teens is not about tightening control. It’s about maintaining the connection you've already built while allowing for new growth. It’s about holding boundaries without losing warmth. And it’s about learning how to stay grounded when emotions rise.

If you’re navigating power struggles, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, or increased conflict at home, let’s work together to shift from reactive cycles into intentional leadership. Parent coaching is a fantastic way to enjoy a calmer, happier household where your children can feel free to explore their individuality.

My Approach To Parent Coaching In Hawaii & California

I’m Stephanie Wise, the therapist and coach behind Sage & Vine Counseling in Kauai, HI. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist in Hawaii and California. My work is rooted in relational and family systems principles.

I draw from attachment-based practices, emotion-focused approaches, nervous system regulation work, and collaborative communication tools. But more than any framework, I bring presence.

Our parent coaching sessions are conversational and reflective. I will ask thoughtful questions. I will gently challenge you when it’s helpful. And I will hold space for the vulnerability that parenting requires. We’ll look at the whole family ecosystem together, not just individual behaviors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Parent Coaching

What does a parent coach do?

A parent coach provides guidance, perspective, and practical tools to help you navigate challenges with more clarity and confidence. It’s collaborative; we work as a team to strengthen your parenting approach and values. In our work together, I help you understand your child’s emotional world, explore patterns within your family, and develop communication and boundary-setting strategies that feel aligned with your values.

How do parent coaching sessions work?

We begin with a consultation call to discuss your goals and concerns. If we decide to move forward, sessions are typically 45 - 60 minutes and scheduled at a frequency that fits your needs, often weekly or biweekly. Sessions are reflective and practical. We talk through real-life situations, unpack what’s happening beneath the surface, and develop tools you can apply immediately at home.

What approaches or strategies do you use in session?

I integrate family systems theory, attachment-based principles, emotion-focused work, and nervous system regulation tools. I also utilize collaborative communication techniques that reduce defensiveness and increase mutual understanding. Every family is different, so I tailor strategies to your specific dynamic rather than using a rigid formula.

Are children involved in parent coaching?

build tools without placing pressure on your child. In some cases, we may incorporate a joint session if it feels appropriate and beneficial. We would discuss this together beforehand.

How many coaching sessions should I do?

This depends on your goals. Some families benefit from short-term coaching (6–10 sessions), while others prefer ongoing support through different developmental stages. During our consultation, we can talk about what timeline feels right for you.

Will my parent coaching session be done remotely?

I offer virtual sessions for families located in Hawaii and California. Virtual sessions are conducted through a secure video platform and allow you to access support from the comfort of your home. For those located on Kauai, I also offer in-person sessions.

How much do parent coaching sessions cost?

Parent coaching sessions are $250/session for couples and $225/session for individuals. If you have questions about fit or finances, I encourage you to reach out to me so we can explore options together.
